Tap dancing, innuendo, and hidden identities are swirling as the Masquers put on their first musical in nearly two years. Coming to AASU's newly renovated Jenkins Hall is Crazy For You, a musical built to showcase favorite Gershwin tunes.

“It’s fitting in a way,” laughs director Pamela Sears, “because there’s a theatre being refurbished in the play.”

Crazy For You follows Bobby Child as he’s rejected by a New York director and is then sent by his fiancee’s family to close a decrepit theatre in Nevada. Before he even arrives he’s garnered an enemy in Polly, whose father owns the theatre Billy’s been sent to close. And wouldn’t you know it, he falls in love with her at first sight. The show continues with a fake accent for Bobby, a plot to keep the theatre alive, and a twisty road to love for all.

Throughout the show, numbers like “I Got Rhythm,” “Slap That Bass,” and “Embraceable You” are used to create this romantic comedy.

“This is a great way to expose the students to Gershwin songs,” says Sears. “It’s so 1930s with the language and slightly suggestive jokes, but it’s all framed up in this proper and charming tone.”

The cast on stage is also supported by a live five-piece orchestra adding to the show’s electricity. While the idea of tapping and singing may be a bit intimidating to most, the feeling amongst the cast is one of excitement and enjoyment.

“I’ve never done a Gershwin show before,” says Bruce Carr,” but I’ve always heard amazing things about them. This production truly has some extraordinary music.”

Benjamin Wolfe, playing Bobby, explains that he loves being able to bring recognizable music to the audience. “It brings a great energy to an already whirlwind show. Once we start rolling, it’s nonstop.”

So as the days get shorter and the weather a bit more chill, go out for a warm evening of riveting song and dance. “You’re guaranteed to be singing along in your head during the show,” promises Wolfe,” and humming on your way home.” cs
