Tender pot roast with rice, carrots and collard greens

Besides banks of big–screen TVs and an occasional pool table or two, sports bars oughta be good at one thing: Making incredible burgers.

There’s no question about the integrity of the burgers at Sandfly Bar & Grill. With veteran grillman Tim Smith behind the scenes, there’s heavy duty experience going into every patty.

But what you don’t expect at a sports bar is a filling, meat–n–three plate lunch. That’s why I passed on the burger I was craving and took the daily special: Pot roast with rice and gravy, carrots and collard greens. Color me happy.

The nice portion of pot roast was tender and nicely seasoned, the gravy fresh and just thick enough to coax together kernels of white rice. The carrots had seen some time in beef broth – and were as tender and sweet what your grandma would make. The greens were surprising – because they were so very good. Excellent seasoning, slow cooked and tender – the epitome of Southern greens.

Even better still, the price tag. At $7.95, the meal was a bargain.

You won’t find anything fancy at Sandfly Bar & Grill – this meal came on a plastic plate with a plastic fork. What you will find is good food, served hot, with an eye toward value.

A good neighbor

Speaking of Sandfly, a neighbor to Sandfly Bar & Grill, Wright Square Cafe, is hosting its first wine dinner on Monday, April 25. The menu and pricing is still being worked out, but the dinner will feature six wines from Stolpman Vineyards of California’s Santa Ynez Valley. Vineyard owner Tom Stolpman will attend the dinner to answer questions and speak about Stolpman wines. I will have details closer to the event, or call the restaurant for pricing and reservations, (912) 349–2452.

Miner wines showcased

Miner Family Vineyards owner Dave Miner will be attending a dinner paired with his wines on Wednesday, April 20, at Ruth’s Chris Steak House. The Napa Valley wine maker will showcase a variety of his wines, including a sampling of his Benedetto Cabernet blend. This bottling is typically reserved for purchasers of Benedetto guitars – of which Miner is an investor. Count on a tune or tune from Benedetto CEO Howard Paul and friends. $75 per person plus tax and gratuity. Reservations, call (912) 721–4800.
