Take in a troupe of seasoned bluegrass players in Bloomingdale this weekend. What began as a side project (hence the moniker) has bloomed into a primary gig for Steve Dilling (banjo), Skip Cherryholmes (guitar), Jason Moore (bass), Brian Aldridge (mandolin), and Nathan Aldridge (fiddle). With their shared roots, both regionally and stylistically, Sideline boasts a hard-to-find sonic chemistry that’s riveting to witness live and in person.

Dilling, who picked up the banjo at just 10 years old, got his start gigging in The Bass Mountain Boys, moving along to The Lonesome River Band. Performing alongside bluegrass juggernauts Russell Moore and Illrd Tyme Out put Dilling in the spotlight.

Cherryholmes got his start playing mandolin with his kin in IBMA-winning, Grammy-nominated Cherryholmes family band. He’s earned many a bluegrass honor, including performing with bluegrass legend Lou Reid in Lou Reid and Carolina.

Moore got his start performing with James King, going on to play with Michael Cleveland and Mountain Heart. The talented bassist is credited on three Grammy-nominated projects, has been up four times for the coveted Bass Player of the Year award at the International Bluegrass Music Awards, and earned the Recorded Event of the Year prize twice and Gospel Event of the Year award. The in-demand session player has performed in nearly 100 (!!!) projects.

Brian Aldridge has been strumming the mandolin since he was just three years old and began playing banjo at 13. His father, like Dilling, performed in The Bass Mountain Boys; that early exposure to bluegrass was a sure influence on now-35-year-old Aldridge’s career.

Brian’s brother, Nathan, has been fiddling since he was two; he studied briefly under Dewey Brown, but has, by and large, taught himself how to saw the strings.
