Born in Savannah and based in Manhattan, Alex Nguyen is a trumpeter and composer making his hometown proud.
The University of North Florida graduate has been captured by jazz since he was a high schooler studying with Savannah legend Teddy Adams. Young Nguyen became a featured soloist with his high school jazz band, and now, Nguyen shares his musical talents around the world with the likes of Cannonball Adderley Legacy Band, the Curtis Fuller Quintet, and the Celebration of Lionel Hampton.
He’s earned first place at the International Trumpet Guild Jazz Competition, taken home the Jamey Aebersold Award for Artistry at the National Trumpet Competition, and even participated in Betty Carter’s Jazz Ahead at the Kennedy Center.
Nguyen’s currently music director at St. George’s Episcopal Church in New York City. Visitors will note his unique use of jazz elements in traditional service music.
