Abel, Rawls & Hayes
This Atlanta-based trio (of Ward Abel, Steve Rawls and Sloan Hayes) is working on their 3rd indie CD. They play tightly constructed pop based in both folk and rock traditions, and are known for their impressive three-part harmonies. Frontman and guitarist Abel’s vocal approach is reminiscent of the great James McMurtry’s – he’s unafraid to let his throaty drawl make an appearance – but there are also echoes of vintage Cat Stevens, Bee Gees, John Prine, and even Meatloaf (!) in their heartbreaking and succinct ruminations.
