The Defilers
Rockabilly trio from Charleston that is “all tore up” with the greaser ethos. Increasingly a familiar site at this downtown punk and indie-rock bar, they’ll remind longtime habitués of the glory days of the venue’s previous incarnation The Velvet Elvis (known far and wide for helping to promulgate the Southeastern psychobilly revival). They’ve just released a self-titled EP that’s a little rough around the edges performance-wise, but which drips with conviction for a proudly cultish genre. Sat., The Jinx.

When a band describes their sound as “a traffic accident inside your stereo,” you know they won’t be playing anything approaching easy listening. Formerly based in Athens, but now hailing from Atlanta, this punk-tinged retro rockabilly act has made 3 albums over the past 8 years, and draw as much inspiration from glam and punk groups like Motley CrÜe and The Clash as they do genre icons like Johnny Burnette. The trio’s gotten better as their lineup has evolved, and they’re now one of the better such combos in this part of the country. Sat., The Jinx.

Solo singer/guitarist who plays a variety of danceable beach, boogie and blues tunes, and accompanies himself with electronic sequenced backing, to simulate “that full band sound.” He’s been a fixture on the Islands music scene for years, and is well-known around these parts. Gail Thurmond
For years now, this facile pianist (with a delicate and charming voice) has entertained patrons in this cozy hardwood bar underneath one of downtown’s nicer eateries. Occasionally accompanied by a standup bassist, she tackles hundreds of time-honored jazz standards, show tunes and pops pieces. Now that Emma Kelly’s no longer with us, catching Gail’s show while sipping a cool beverage is becoming something of a local rite of passage.
