Action
Canadian act whose sound is based on British, American and Scandinavian hardcore and incorporates acoustic instruments. Their stated goal is to “make punk a threat again!” Wed., The Jinx.
The Back River Ramblers
Regional acoustic trio of Dobby Simmons, Daryl Wise, and “Georgia Kyle” Shiver – offering country, folk and blues-inspired tunes. Thurs., 7:30 pm, Fannie’s On The Beach (Tybee) + Sat., 10 pm, Fiddler’s Crab House.
Defiance
One of the more influential U.S. street punk bands of the last decade, this Portland-based group was an acknowledged influence on both Anti-Flag and The Unseen. They’re touring in support of a massive compilation of their rare single and EP tracks. Wed., The Jinx.
The Defilers
Greaser-punk and retro rockabilly act from Charleston. Sat., The Jinx.
Eat Mo’ Music
Funky, dance-oriented instrumental jazz quintet (trumpet, electric bass and guitar, drums, and trombone) whose members all have day jobs as music educators. Fri. - Sat., 9 pm, Jazz’d Tapas Bar.
Fox Trotsky
Atlanta power trio playing hopped-up ska-punk with moody breakdowns and theatrical elements. Fri., The Jinx.
Jeanne Flight (CD Release)
Boisterous, up-and-coming local “experimental rock” quartet whose pinched and angular guitar squeal and vintage keyboard sounds slightly recall early ‘80s Talking Heads, while their herky-jerky rhythms and obtuse, declamatory vocals find them rubbing style shoulders with Über-trendy crossover superstars Franz Ferdinand. A welcome addition to the local scene. Fri., The Jinx.
Keith & Ross
Local acoustic duo playing well-known country, classic and Southern rock tunes, along with a handful of like-minded originals. Sat., 9 pm, The Oyster Bar (Wilmington Island).
Lanky
A hard-touring New Jersey tunesmith who racks up accolades wherever he goes. With a vocal style that references John Mayer (thus Sting), Alex Chilton, and even Bono (at his most fragile) and a knack for penning dreamy ruminations on love, longing and salvation. Thurs., 10 pm, Fiddler’s Crab House.
Old-Time Jam Session
Led by local musicologist and multi-instrumentalist Joe Nelson, this regularly scheduled cross between an unplugged Open Hoot and a group lesson finds him offering pointers on the rhythmic nuances of early American country and blues, then encouraging any stringed-instrument players in the crowd (from fiddle to standup bass to guitar to ukulele) to join in on timeless tunes from that era. Mon., 7 pm, The Sentient Bean.
Passafire
Terrific Savannah-based original rock band with a strong foundation built on reggae and hip-hop. Their infectious, organic groove music is catching on regionally. Sat., Locos Deli & Pub.
The Denny Phillips Band
Well-known local rock and pop party band with a repertoire of hits from the ‘60s onward. Vocalist Phillips also does a damn good Neil Diamond. Fri., 9 pm, The Oyster Bar (Wilmington Island).
Soap
Brand-new local act describing themselves as ‘70s-style garage rockers that look to The Velvet Underground for inspiration. Thurs., 8 pm, The Sentient Bean.
The Wayside Riders
Atlanta-based double-drumming jam band featuring former members of The Grapes (!). Sat., JJ Cagney’s.
The Greg Williams Band
Excellent roadhouse rock, blues and soul combo that’s fluid enough to stretch out and jam if need be, yet still mindful of song structure. They mostly focus on the melodic and poetic originals of their leader, but drop a few greasy rave-up covers (Dylan, Stones, Little Feat) into their sets as well. Fri., JJ Cagney’s.
