Argyle
Fresh off of their wildly successful CD release party, this relentless, punk-tinged quartet continues to capitalize on their growing fanbase with a set at this River Street jam room. Expect plenty of reggae and rock covers to fill out the night, but the highlights will undoubtedly be their intensely cathartic – and highly syncopated – originals that recall both early Primus and 311. Sat., JJ Cagney’s.
Laura Blackley, Dean Fields
Double bill of two acclaimed touring singer/songwriters, featuring the “elegantly aggressive” Americana of Asheville’s Blackley, and the MTV-friendly modern pop (think David Gray) of Fields. Sat., 8 pm, The Sentient Bean.
Tim Burke
This extremely talented guitarist and bassist has one of the most pleasing country and pop voices in the area, and has worked in several notable bluegrass, country and pop outfits over the years, including The Double Diamond Band, The Denny Phillips Band, and The Jimmy Wolling Band. He’s always begging me to write something specifically about him, and now I have. Fri., Driftaway Café (Wilmington Island).
Kim Calhoun & Friends
If you used to catch The Deep South Band playing traditional country at the Holiday Inn out on 204, this reunion of 3 of its members will be a trip down memory lane. They still boasts the vocal harmonies that made them popular in the 1980s. Fri., The Sea Grill (Pt. Wentworth).
The Buddy Corns Band
Relatively new local group (rock and blues covers and originals) led by a prolific songwriter and ace guitarist who was formerly a member of The Dynamic Duo. Fri., JJ Cagney’s.
Eat Mo' Music
Instrumental jazz quintet (bass, drums, guitar, trumpet, trombone) with an emphasis on soulful solos and funky grooves. Sat., 9 pm, Jazz’d Tapas Bar.
Roger Moss & Friends
Cabaret-style show based around the great American songbook (Mercer, Carmichael, Ellington, etc...) and featuring the award-winning vocalist Moss, plus standup bassist Peter Berquist and the sublime pianist Eric Jones. Sat., 9 pm, The Mansion on Forsyth Park.
Needles & Threads Suspension & Lingerie Show
Co-sponsored by the body modification studio Planet 3, and designer Jeanne Tompkins’ Lucky Doll Lingerie company, this two-floor exhibition features brave souls willingly hung from all manner of body parts for the purpose of, well, some purpose – and over a dozen girls modeling handmade underwear from the Savannah-based seamstress. Sat., AVM Entertainment Complex.
Passafire
Up-and-coming local alternative act that mixes organic hip-hop and reggae into infectious, rap-leaning modern rock. They rarely play hometown shows, preferring instead to ply their wares on the road throughout the Southeast. Sat., Locos Deli & Pub.
Rocket 350
Straight-up old-school greaser rockabilly from the Atlanta area that’s had a strong buzz here for years. Opening the show: cock-rock revivalists Grayson Manor. Sat., 10 pm, The Jinx.
The Bobby Ryder Quartet
Jazz standards and swing tunes, featuring a longtime vocalist with an affinity for Sinatra. Thurs., 7:30 pm, The Jazz Corner (Hilton Head).
Sapphire Bullets of Pure Love
13-piece soul and classic rock show band (with a full horn section and some of the best players in the area) offering everything from Motown and Stax numbers to funky John Hiatt gems. Well worth the drive to this snazzy seafood restaurant and bar near the coast. Sat., 9 pm, Sunbury Crab Company (Sunbury).
Sam Shaber
Exceptional songwriter and guitarist with a beautiful voice and a knack for impressionistic lyrics. She’s worked with the well-known Shawn Mullins. Thurs., 8 pm, The Sentient Bean.
Southpaw
Popular country and Southern rock covers, plus a few originals. Fri. - Sat., 9 pm, Silver Dollar Bar & Grill (Hwy 204).
Ross Tompkins
This former Tonight Show pianist (back in Johnny Carson’s day) is something of a minor legend in the big band world, and this rare 2-nighter of solo performances should be delightful. Fri. - Sat., 7:30 pm, The Jazz Corner (Hilton Head).
Voodoo Soup
Powerhouse rock and soul combo that wrings the hell out of classic rock and funk with a ferocious attack, courtesy of Permanent Tourists bassist Eric Moore and lead guitarist Shane Morton. Wed., JJ Cagney’s + Sun., 10 pm, Mercury Lounge.
