Chatham County Chairman gives notice of police merger breakup

As expected, Chatham County Commission Chairman Al Scott sent a certified letter today to Savannah City Manager Stephanie Cutter giving formal notice of the County's exercise of the option not to renew the ten-year-old merger of City and County police.

The letter followed a unanimous Sept. 26 vote of the Commission giving him authority to do so.

The issues have to do with funding formula disagreements and hire-and-fire authority and management of the police chief position.

The letter says in part: "The County does not believe that the provisions of the police merger agreement have been followed nor has a renegotiated agreement been reached as was contemplated."

However, the letter does say, "Nothing about this Notice precludes further negotiation."
