Fireworks prompt 'erroneous report'

Fireworks being discharged in Daffin Park "led to erroneous reports on a Savannah television station that shots had been fired near a private school Tuesday afternoon," police say.

Central Precinct Patrol officers from the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department responded to a call about potential gunshots across Waters Avenue from Blessed Sacrament School on East 44th Street about 4 p.m. "But a custodian told responding officers that the sounds actually came from the park and he saw smoke from the fireworks," police say.

Some students still as the school were called back to the building until police responded, police say. Those who ignited the fireworks were not identified.
