The West Broad Street YMCA held a groundbreaking today on a shade house for The Beloved Community Urban Farm, the community garden on site at the Y’s facility on May Street.
"The shade house is just one part of a broader initiative by the Growing Edge Community Collaboration, a 14-agency nonprofit cooperative charged with establishing a healthy food resource on the west side of Savannah," a spokesperson says.
“This shade house will allow us to have year-round production in our garden, and provide healthy food to the children and families the Y serves on a daily basis,” said ZaDonna Slay, executive director and CEO of the West Broad Street YMCA. “We are especially grateful to our community partners, Emergent Structures, Greenline Architecture, JE Dunn/Rives E. Worrell Co. and Gulfstream Aerospace. Without them, we would not be breaking ground today.”
Emergent Structures, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, is leading the design-build effort to construct an on-site shade house using reclaimed materials, with Greenline Architecture contributing the plans and Rives E. Worrell Co./JE Dunn leading the construction, both in pro bono capacity. The initiative is being funded through a grant by Gulfstream Aerospace Corp. to address areas in the Coastal Empire that lack access to healthy, affordable food.
“As the organization responsible for the design and build of the shade house, Emergent Structures deeply appreciates the knowledge, expertise and commitment that Greenline Architecture and Rives E. Worrell have made to Emergent Structures to ensure the shade house project is a valuable and memorable contribution to the West Broad Street Y’s permanent facilities,” said Scott Boylston, president, Emergent Structures.
