Chatham County Police Officers responded to a call at Old Fort Jackson on July 20, at approximately 6:45 pm upon report that "human remains were discovered nearby," a police spokesperson says.
"Detectives and the Forensics unit were called in to document the scene and remains were recovered by the Coroner’s Office along with Chatham Headout and Recovery," police say.
Police say the initial investigation revealed that "the remains have been there for quite some time and are spread out over several feet."
The investigation is ongoing and police say they won't comment further until the investigation is complete.
