The holidays are over and it's back to reality as the City of Savannah begins implementing its new Parking Matters rate structure for parking downtown today.

But, there's a bit of a grace period until they actually start ticketing you, City officials say.

This only effects on-street parking north of Liberty Street. Parking rates in that "Zone 1" go up to $2 per hour. Outside that area, Zone 2, rates will be $1 per hour.

The days you must pay throughout downtown in both zones are extended to Monday-Saturday, and you must pay for parking until 8 p.m. all those days.

However, your parking is unlimited in each space.

Until Jan. 16, the City of Savannah will begin alerting/reminding people who park in the affected Zones 1 and 2 on by placing Parking Guides on cars parking in the zones between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m., Monday through Saturday

The week of Jan. 16-22, the City will issue warnings on all vehicles that do not comply with new parking hours and the City will place Parking Guides on these vehicles as well.

On January 22, you'll start getting tickets for real.
