As a result of the shooting on Hawthorne Avenue near the school this evening, all homecoming activities scheduled for the evening of Friday, October 3, at Savannah High School have been cancelled, officials say.

This includes the football game that was scheduled to take place against Johnson High.

School remains in session tomorrow and teaching and learning will continue on regular schedule.

Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police continue to investigate the shooting of the 16-year-old male in east Savannah Thursday afternoon.

The high school student was transported to Memorial University Medical Center with a serious wound that was not considered life-threatening. Officers were called to the 2200 block of Hawthorne Street at 3:50 p.m. and found the teen on the side of the street.

"The shooting reportedly occurred while a group of teens from the neighborhood who are familiar with each other were gathered," police say.
